3 Simple Steps To Making An Awesome Father Of The Groom Speech

by Phillipa O'Reilly

You realize you'll need to give a father of the groom speech at your son's wedding and that is the part of the day that you're least looking forward to. You want your son to be proud of you, after all you're certain you will be proud of him. There are three basic steps to preparing a father of the groom speech that you can deliver with full confidence and I have outlined them in this article.

Plan

Even seasoned public speakers can be concerned about delivering a speech at their own son's wedding. Let's face it there are things you definitely cannot leave out or forget to say. Imagine if you forgot to welcome your son's bride to the family? What would your son think if you got caught up in your nerves and told that really embarrassing story that you promised you wouldn't mention? This is why planning is very important. You really have to plan in advance exactly what you are going to say.

Prepare

I suggest that you write the important points on small cue cards, as they will be easy to manage and will fit nicely into your suit pocket. Small cue cards are easy to handle and will help you enormously to deliver your wedding speech.

Practice

Now it is time to get a lot of practice in. I cannot emphasize this enough. Do a couple of practice runs by yourself. Say your speech a few times out loud. Get familiar with how your voice sounds. Are you putting an emphasis on the punchline? Are you speaking clearly enough for everybody to hear you? When you practice aloud you will know the answers to these questions and you should also gain the self-confidence you need to give your father of the groom speech. Once you feel that you are well practiced, gather a small audience and do one last practice run. Take on board any helpful criticism they give you and give your speech one final polish.

When you plan, prepare and practice your wedding speech you will be on the right track to making your son proud. If you would like some speech samples and expert tips, there are resources available that will give you all the information you'll need.
