Effective Public Speaking is Essential to Career Development

by Jack McMartin

There is an unbelievable phenomenon that occurs all the time in the modern world. Professionals that are effective at speaking advance more quickly in their particular organizations than individuals that don't. Take America's current president, Barack Obama. He ascended to the top career position that's currently attainable in the entire world based on what? Though he may have a certain amount of professional experience, his resume was significantly weaker in comparison with that of the vast majority of previous presidents. As a black man he also had to surmount significant racial barriers to become president. On paper, you could have made a strong case for why he wasn't ready to become president or why the nation wouldn't be willing to vote for him (see both reasons above).

Yet he emerged as a celebrity. Why? I believe a key reason is his amazing public speaking proficiency. His natural ability to capture an audience is unmatched over the past two decades in the political world. Not even Bill Clinton, who was renowned as a great public speaker compares. This is also true for former President Reagan. No one would've dreamed an actor could be elected as president. Nevertheless it happened to some extent because of Reagan's skill before a crowd. So just what exactly does any of this have to do with you and me?

It means we need to become great public speakers. If you and I want to rise to the top, it isn't optional. Add this competency to an already strong set of skills and competencies and you've got a lethal combination. So why not start working on your presentation skills now. There are tons of resources to aide you and quite a few services to help you become more effective.

Watch examples of great speeches. Learn how to design outstanding PowerPoint presentations. You can even hire a company that offers PowerPoint presentation design services to do it for you. Read up on how to conquer the phobia of public speaking.

Whatever you do, don't underestimate the power of being a good public speaker . A small investment in this skill set will go a long way. Grow in this ability and you will see your career prospects go through the roof.
