Debating Skills That You Should Be Utilizing

by Mark Walters

Inevitably, you will find yourself in situations in which you have to convince someone else that you are correct about a particular topic. It is going to happen. You may be a salesperson who must assure a customer that what you are selling is wonderful. You may be in a more formal debate situation such as on a team at a competition. If you have chosen a life of politics, you will likely find yourself attempting to show potential voters that you are more qualified for a position than your opponent. Regardless of the situation that has brought about the discussion, there are effective debating techniques that will help your cause.

The first, and possibly the most important technique, is to make eye contact. This is a requisite habit if you wish to make the right impression. It may not apply completely in a team debate situation because many notes must be pored over in a limited amount of time; however, when speaking to someone one-on-one and in other daily situations, holding the other's eye is a necessity. If you look to the ground or by your debate partner, your confidence will suffer. The confidence others have in you will wilt as well. Maintaining eye contact will also cause your opponent to wonder whether they have what it takes to compete. If you do not avert your gaze, you display an air of authority and it shows that you have a firm grasp on the topic.

Though a debate can become heated and emotional, you should not overly gesticulate with your hands and head. This will serve only to distract yourself while your arms are swinging around. The movements will also distract observers of the debate, whether it be those you are trying to convince or judges scoring your abilities. Extra motion of your body may also indicate that you are making up for some deficiency, such as a lack of understanding of your topic. Also, keeping still will calm your nerves and allow you to stay on track and pay attention to the debate in which you are involved.

Verbalizing is just one aspect of a debate. Another, and equally important one, is listening. You must absorb what your opponent says so that you may competently form a rebuttal. If you are thinking about other things or are simply playing over in your head the words you want to say, your grasp of the debate will lessen. If you have not closely considered your opponent's words, then your counter statements may not be relevant.

Essentially, if you are able to step back and take a breath, you are ahead of the game. By remaining calm, you are better able to assemble your thoughts, hone in on your opponent's rebuttals, and offer an air of confidence. With effective debating techniques, you are better equipped to convince your audience of your accuracy.
