(public speaker) Greek bill sparks RUSA controversy - RU Daily Targum (subscription)

Donors who want to give money to University residence halls receive an added perk in addition to the satisfaction that comes with generosity - a tax write off. But while donating to residence halls, which are classified as non-profit housing organizations, is a deduction, donating to greek housing is not. In an effort to encourage more donations to greek housing both on campus and across the country, some members of the Rutgers University Student Assembly drafted a resolution that supported the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act, currently in the United States Congress. The bill would enable donors to claim tax deductions after donating money to greek housing. Although the resolution had the support of RUSA Legislative Affairs Chair Christopher Keating and several other assembly members, it failed after being delayed for several weeks. Although donating to greek housing is not tax deductible, deductions can still be granted to certain other housing buildings that are not residence halls, such as the Chabad House. read more
