(public speaker) Nigeria: Country's House of Commotion - AllAfrica.com
This government apparatus, empowered by the Nigerian constitution to enact laws, aimed at improving the lot of the people politically, socially and economically, has had its fair share of administrative and political hiccups and setbacks, which many political analysts believe is a necessity for the growth and eventual sustainability of the Nigerian state. Political pundits are undivided in the belief that this present legislative dispensation, practically filled with political jobbers, charlatans, thug-turned politicians, political turncoats and self-styled public office snatchers, would certainly not beat the record of their predecessors in the legislature, who despite their obvious deficiencies, were still able to pass a record total of 638 bills in the period spanning June 1999 to December 2005. Since the onset of the present National Assembly, especially the lower House, chaired by the battle-scarred, irrepressible and stout-hearted first female Speaker of the House, it has been a story of serial bickering, shameless internal wranglings, rancour and destructive acrimony. Instead of embarking on their duties as enshrined in the constitution, the members of the House have decided to give the Nigerian public an undiluted treat of street thuggery, "superb" martial arts display and amusing concotion of comedy and cartoon, though at the expense of national honour, integrity and prestige. read more
