Well, it seems that because we consumers haven't been doling out as much money on gifts this year, Christmas has been judged as not doing so well. I don't intend to discourage people from supporting their local retailers, but, honestly, when did spending money have anything to do with having a good or bad Christmas? Oh sure, in our modern American culture it would seem that buying a lot of gifts — the more expensive the better — is what Christmas is all about, but tell me, please, what part of the true Christmas — or for that matter Hanukkah, solstice or Kwanzaa — celebration is about how much money we spend? I don't recall any of these Season of Light celebrations focusing on braving crowded malls or cruising Web sites to buy a lot of stuff for our family and friends — stuff they most likely don't really need and will open wondering where the heck they're going to store it or how to slip it into their next garage sale without our knowing. read more
